Halloween...in Georgetown?

My friend FLG struck a nerve with me today via email and with this post.

So…for him:

Halloween looms large here in the South, where the Old Ways die hard and secret rites and forgotten fears lie hidden in shed-side shadows and in the ditches of Autumnal roadsides.
And when the Moon peeks out to loose its silvery smooth illumination on the dim, lamp-lit streets of my town…I know I shall see many things that will chill my heart and tingle my skin with various prickles and stings. There are some things which seem harmless in the broad light of day but they become Real Fears when faced underneath the black, oppressive maw of an October midnight.
But there are fears more real to me than werewolves, vampires or even reanimated mummies running rampant through the hills of my youth…

The tang of human salt on the tongue...the slow-motion boneless glide of lips meeting in the dark...the slippery whispers of last-ditch promises made in the middle of the night...and the certain knowledge of how the End will come.

That's why I'm a Yankee. Too many vexations and ill portents down yonder way.

We live day-to-day with our ghosts down here; this bloody earth is deeply haunted.
And you can still bring any conversation, with even the most erudite folks, to a screeching halt by merely mentioning the name “Sherman.”

Ah, the difference between the South and everywhere else... Here, remembrances from the past are as much a part of the present as the the salt is a part of the ocean.. They are simply us..
